Seniors Laiken Carlson and Connor Colvert will compete at the State UIL CX (Cross Examination) Debate meet in Austin on March 16 and 17. Sophomores Hudson Little and Aaron Evans earned their position as alternate team for the meet.
“It’s cool to be an alternate because it can be something to put on my resume,” Little said. “Debate is a way to prepare myself for college.”
Science teacher Elizabeth Collier began coaching CX debate last year and added LD debate this year.
“In two years, Collier has built a great debate team that allows me to express myself,” sophomore Colten Johnston said. “This year’s topic was good and it related to the current events with Greenland.”
This year marks the first time an FHS team has qualified for state in CX since 2020. At that time, one of the team members was Kelton Carlson, Laiken’s older brother. The state level of CX competition was cancelled that year due to covid restrictions.
“Laiken Carlson and Connor Colvert have worked super hard this year in CX Debate,” Collier said. “These two individuals have represented Fairfield HS by dominating in the practice meets all year.”
This year’s topic is “The United States federal government should significantly increase its exploration and or development of the arctic.” The topic for next year’s competition will be “The United States federal government should establish national health insurance in the United States.”
“As their coach, I am so proud of them,” Collier said, “and know they will do well at the State meet.”
