The Culinary Arts course at the high school has been expanding in their curriculum by changing famous dishes and adding their own unique aspects. The Culinary Arts teacher Laura Tugwell is the one in charge. Every couple of days the students are given a new dish to put their creative twist on. So far, the students have made hamburgers and ramen bowls.
Hamburgers are one of the most popular American foods but they can be made to reflect many different ethic cuisines and styles. Students were able to use a variety of ingredients to change up their burgers from adding, homemade slaws, unusual cheeses, fried eggs, and more to jazz up their every day classic burger.
“The students are given a variety of ingredients to use when cooking,” said Tugwell. “For example they were given fried eggs, unusual cheeses, and homemade slaws for their hamburgers.”
Students also prepared ramen and could choose from a variety of ingredients such as mushrooms, scallions, cabbage, carrots, fresh ginger, eggs, chicken breast, turkey meatballs, red/yellow/orange bell peppers, garlic, jalapeno peppers, purple onions, limes, fish oil, soy sauce, and a pantry full of spices. On the second day of the experience the students cooked their proteins, noodles and vegetables to their liking, plating their foods then describing their dish, their preparation steps to the class and enjoying their masterpiece.
“Students were given the option to choose from a variety of ingredients such as veggies, herbs, eggs, and varieties of meats.” Tugwell said. “They were able to plate their food themselves to create their masterpieces.”
