The annual One Stop Recycle Drop will be held at the FISD Welding Center tomorrow and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The 2024 November Recycling Event allows students to participate in helping save paper, plastic, and more. It promotes student acknowledgment of the importance of recycling.
“Recycling is important for numerous reasons,” Interact Club sponsor Angela Oglesbee said. “Waste is often the cause of pollutants in our environment and anything we can do to alleviate this problem is beneficial to all.”
Unlike the monthly recycling events, which only take tin, aluminum, plastic, and paper products, the One Stop Cycle Drop includes medication disposals, textiles, electronics, batteries, glasses, and accessories.
“This specific recycle drive is special,” Interact Club President Preston Scott said,” because there are many more opportunities for people to donate materials they wouldn’t be able to at the recycle drives during other months”.
The event is made possible by the Lions Club, FISD Recycle Team, NRG Energy—Limestone plant, Fairfield ISD Rotary Club, FHS Interact Club, Fairfield PD, and the city of Fairfield.
“This event imparts a fantastic occasion for students to meet others in our town,” Oglesbee said. “This two-hour volunteer service activity provides students a great opportunity to give back to the community and contributes to their helping protect our environment.”
The recycling program began in 2009 with the assistance of a TCEQ grant through the Heart of Texas Council of Governments that allowed for the purchase of recycling bins. The first electronics recycling event was held in August of 2010 which evolved into The One Stop Drop.
“It is crazy to realize that we have been recycling in Fairfield for 14 years now,” high school sponsor Nicole Crawford said. “Aside from the recycling, we enjoy seeing our friends (and their dogs) in the community every month. We are always accepting volunteers!”
