Red Ribbon Week 2024 begins next week on October 28 and ends on November 1. Celebrations include dress up themes and an art competition promoting drug abuse awareness.
“To me,” senior Red Ribbon Week committee leader Jimilyah Nash said, “the meaning of Red Ribbon Week is to bring awareness to what drugs can do to you and a reminder of how serious the effects can be.”
During the week, students will come to school dressed up in their western gear on Monday, camouflage on Tuesday, patriotic on Wednesday, Hawaiian on Thursday, and neon on Friday.
“We wanted the days to be something where everyone in the school could participate,” senior Red Ribbon Week committee leader Carolyn Dunlap said. “Something that was simple but festive.”
Along with the dress-up days, an art contest for students to participate in will commence, its theme being “Life is a Movie, Film Drug Free.” The three separate categories are: digital (graphic art/design), photography and physical art (painting, drawing, collages etc).
“I am excited to see what type of art projects that our FHS students can create in support of Red Ribbon Week,” teacher Elizabeth Collier said. “Since we have three different categories, I hope the students get creative and put their personality into this competition.”
All submissions must be turned into Mrs. Collier or Ms. Wade by October 30. Student Council members will be the judges.
