It was a sad night on the Eagles baseball field as the senior boy said their final goodbyes to the field as they played their last home game ever. On April 16, 2024, The boys walked onto the field, received their senior gifts and then went to play a good game.
“First I never really saw myself as a head baseball coach,” head coach Andrew Downing said. “Always loved the game and enjoyed it, but never actually thought I would coach it at the Highschool level. Then because of some wild circumstances Coach Bachtel offered me the job and I ran with it. And I’ve enjoyed every second of it along the way. I’ve said it before, these senior boys embody everything that is Fairfield athletics and even more so, my philosophy for Fairfield Baseball. They are just tough gritty kids that play hard and find a way to win. Fairfields baseball program will really miss them. However, hopefully they’ve made an impact for the others to continue right where they leave off.
They played against Elkhart home and they won with a score of 8-2. They are now 2nd in the district. Overall they are now 16-8. They will begin playoffs tomorrow.
“Being a part of this year’s group is like no other year since I have been on the team,” senior Cameron Cockerell said. “This year’s group of guys are so fun to be around and never take things too seriously. The guys I get to be around every day make the game so much fun and I’m glad I got to enjoy playing my final season here at Fairfield with them. Being a senior on the team is more responsibility than I originally imagined. Everything falls on your shoulders, from making pitching decisions to taking the blame; it all falls on us, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
The senior varsity boys are Cameron Cockerell, Rowdy Hand, Mason Daniels, River Bonds, and Kipp Collins.
The seniors I have the privilege of playing with are by far the best group of guys I have ever been around and I love them like brothers,” Cockerell said. “I have got to play ball with my best friends since I can remember and it’s a sad thing that its coming to an end.”
