Both the boys and girls golf teams will advance to the regional tournament in Brenham on April 15-18.
“We will have the opportunity to possibly get a boy or two out this year for state, if they continue to shoot the scores they have so far this year,” coach Kris Ballew said. “We have the same expectation this year for our girls.”
The boys’ advancing team consists of junior Cade Nelson, junior Chandler Phillips, senior Dio Azuara, senior Jake White, and sophomore Brayden Thornburg. The boys second team consists of sophomore Ayden Jones, sophomore Mason Edwards, junior Eli Owen, senior Tracey Johnson, sophomore Laiken Carlson, and junior Cabastion Cargill.
“I think that for regionals we will have a better placement than last year,” Phillips said. “Last year we just played, but this year it is more serious.”
The girls team consists of senior Allie Hughes who placed first individually, junior Zada Pjetrovic, freshman Addison Shipley, freshman Hadassah Owen, freshman Cariss Capps, and junior Addison Bailes.
“I am very proud of our team’s accomplishments this year and at the district tournament,” Hughes said. “I am looking forward to seeing all the teams at regionals, and we are going to do our best!”
The season accomplishments of the girls’ team include: second place at the Bosqueville Tournament, second place at the Athens Tournament, first place at the Teague Tournament, and second place at the UIL 3A District Tournament.
“Our golfers have really improved this year from last year across the entire program,” Ballew said. “I’m proud of the work they have put in each week to really improve.”
The season accomplishments of the boys’ team(s) include: first place at the Bosqueville Tournament, second place at the Athens Tournament, second place at the Teague Tournament, and second place at the district tournament.
“We went into district with the expectation to advance to regionals, knowing it would be incredibly difficult to do,” Ballew said. “Our district was extremely competitive this year and we knew we had to play some of our best golf to make it out for regionals.”
Hughes has advanced to state the last two years. She signed a letter of intent with Jacksonville College to play golf this fall.
