The Push, published in 2021, by Ashley Audrain is a suspenseful novel about a mother who believes her child is a killer. It provides a psychologically unsettling look at the dark, uncertain parts of motherhood. As the book unfolds, we see how the protagonist is driven to a state of extreme anxiety as she is constantly told that her worries are all nonsense.
The novel is about the mother (Blythe Connor) attempting to be the best mother she can be to her daughter Violet. Blythe comes from a long line of abusive women and silent fathers and is very nervous about motherhood. However, as Violet starts to grow up she acquires a strange feeling that something is off about Violet. She believes that Violet is different from other children and there is something wrong with her. When she tells her husband (Fox Connor) about her concerns he dismisses her and tells her that there’s nothing wrong. Blythe slowly starts to go insane as she constantly tries to convince herself that her daughter is perfectly fine.
After a couple of years, Blythe has her second child named Sam. There is something peaceful about having Sam and she instantly feels a motherly connection to him. She even notices that Violet likes him as well, or so she thought. Unfortunately the book takes a turn here and Blythe’s life goes downhill as her family is torn apart.
