#23 Tyler Smith lines up with the Eagles against Robinson on September 18.

Every football season has its particular trials, and this year the Eagles have been up against covid, teams from larger schools, and injury. That hasn’t stopped the Eagles from pulling together.

The Eagles will begin district play away in Groesbeck against the Goats Friday at 7:30 pm.

“I think we will do just fine in district,” coach Kevin Childers said. “I think that the non district teams that we have played have prepared us for district. Playing higher level competition has helped us tremendously.”

The Eagles have had three losses and one cancelled game in the season so far.

“I think we will do pretty good,” senior Luke Latham said. “We’ve played some difficult teams. One huge obstacle for our offence and defense was losing lil Eli Martin. That was tough for our team.”

Sophomore running back Eli Martin will be out for the season due to injury.

“Losing a really good running back Eli Martin has been hard,” junior Daryan Harris said, “but we’ve moved people around and just got better from there. Our coaching staff has prepared us. Our coaching staff is the best.”

Eagles lost 35-21 against Robinson last week after a non-scoring loss against Athens. Groesbeck has a pre-district record of 2-2.

“We’re going in with a lot more confidence now,” senior Dylan Rushin said. “We started off with not very much chemistry. You know, we were young and some of us don’t know each other that well. We’ve been playing a lot better now and trusting each other.

Seating at the game is limited, and tickets will be available at the FISD central office until noon Thursday.

“We have a lot of kids that have not played before this season,” coach Bill Crawford said. “Several of our starters have only 3 or 4 varsity level games under their belts. Just getting that time to play is very important. I think we will do very well [in district].”
