Senior Takes First at State

Treyden Johnson placed 1st at the State Powerlifting meet in Abilene on March 24 with a total weight of 1900.  At the meet, Treyden broke two school records, one as a consecutive two time state champion, and one on squat with 850 pounds. Evan Chavers placed 12th with a total of 1400. Landon Salinas made 12th in his weight class as well with a total of 1550. 

“Four boys that qualified for state lift on that night, and I am excited to see them compete,” coach Tanner Tunstal said. “Each athlete has been working really hard and all of them have a chance to get a medal at state. The girls finished 6th place as a team. I thought each girl lifted really great. I thought they competed hard and I’m very proud of them.”

The girls powerlifting state results are Emma Jo Smith made 2nd in the 114 weight class. Taylor Stone made 4th in the 148 class. Kalli Richardson tied for 3rd in the 220 class. Destiny Dowell made 3rd in the SHW class. Danna Munoz made 7th in the 198 class.

“My brother was the person who inspired me to get into powerlifting since he was in it during high school so by me going to state I knew I was making him proud, ” Munoz said. “Overall, I am truly blessed to have had such great coaches and friends throughout the season. They made sure to make my last year the best year and I will forever be thankful for every single one of them. My mom also played a huge factor in this because she would go to every meet and would also cheer me on.”

At the region meet, Evan Chavers made 2nd in the 181 weight class. breaking the record for bench press with a bench of 385. Jose Gutierrez placed 3rd in the 114 weight class, but unfortunately he couldn’t compete at state because of a last minute back injury. Landon Salinas placed 2nd in the 242 weight class. Treyden Johnson placed 1st in SHW class and tied the total record with a total of 1820. In regionals Emma Jo Smith made 1st place with a total of 760 and 114 weight class and broke a regional record for squat with a 330 lb squat. Taylor Stone made 1st place with a total of 915 and 148 class. Danna Munoz made 1st with a total of 885 and 198 class. Kalli Richardson tied for 1st place with a total of 1010 and 220 class. Destiny Dowell made 1st with a total 1020 and 259+ class.
