Seniors Jonathan Thomas and Kaden Lambright will advance as alternate to the state UIL Cross Examination Debate meet in Austin.

Thomas and Lambright competed in the district meet on February 8 at Buffalo High School and placed third.

“I’m very proud of Jonathan and Kaden” said coach Peter Marotta said. “They stepped into CX Debate as seniors and made our school proud.”

In CX Debate, a team of partners advocates for policy changes specifically for the US Government at this particular moment. CX Debate partners need to prepare a case centered on the topic for the year. Each student must work together to make a case, while also being prepared to offer counter arguments against opposing teams’ cases.

“Doing CX Debate has been an eye-opening experience for me in terms of communication and development of logic,” Thomas said. “I feel that, although I may be great at developing original thought for an entire essay, I have a modest talent for connecting the dots in logic. That is why I had a great thrill competing in CX Debate.”

This year’s topic was:

Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase its security cooperation with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in one or more of the following areas: artificial intelligence, biotechnology, cybersecurity.
