The JV and varsity baseball teams have started practice, and the first game of the season will be February 21 here against Kerens.

In preparation for their season, the Eagles scrimmaged against Palestine Monday, and the next scrimmage will be February 17 at Frankston.

The JV game surprised me in a great way,” head baseball coach Andrew Downing said. “Without many opportunities to throw off the mound our pitchers did great, our hitters put the ball in play and were extremely coachable. [I’m] proud of how they played. The Varsity game showed us we still have a lot to work on. But [we] have a great foundation to start on.”

The JV starting pitcher is sophomore Rustyn Taylor, and catcher is freshman Tate Lewis.

“I think that we have really good talent,” Lewis said. “We have great pitchers, catchers, infielders, outfielders. All round the team is good and I think we will do well this season.”

Senior Kolby Adams is the varsity starting pitcher. Adams and senior Braiden Barrett both catch.

“The pitchers came in and did a great job,” Downing said. “We started feeling more comfortable at the plate, which was a great sign seeing our first live pitching of the year. We have some student athletes that can come up and help the varsity which is exciting, and also have some that will need to get more reps at the lower level to develop more.”
