There was fierce competition this year at the Winter Olympics. Every country put forth their best competitors and the results show just that.

This year’s overall winner was Norway with a total of 37 medals awarded to their athletes. They won by a landslide with the ROC being five medals behind them in second place and ten ahead of Germany in third overall.

In Alpine Skiing, Switzerland won the most medals with 5 in gold, 1 in silver, and 3 in bronze. In Cross-country Skiing, Norway won the most medals with 5 in gold, 1 in silver, and 2 in bronze. In Freestyle Skiing, the People’s Republic of China won the most medals with 4 in gold and 2 in silver. In Ski Jumping, Slovenia won the most medals with 2 in gold, 1 in silver, and 1 in bronze.

In Biathlon, Norway won the most medals with 6 in gold, 2 in silver, and 6 in bronze. In Nordic Combined, Norway won the most medals with 2 in gold and 2 in silver. In Snowboarding, Austria won the most medals with 3 in gold and 1 in silver.

In this next group of events Germany swiped the first place spot in all. For Bobsleigh, they won with 3 in gold, 3 in silver, and 1 in bronze. In Luge, Germany won with 4 in gold and 2 in silver. Finally with Skeleton, they won with 2 in gold and 1 in silver.

In Curling, Great Britain won the most medals with 1 in gold and 1 in silver. In Ice Hockey, Finland won the most medals with 1 in gold and 1 in bronze.

In Speed Skating, Netherlands won the most medals with 6 in gold, 4 in silver, and 2 in bronze. In Short Track Speed Skating, the Republic of Korea won the most medals with 2 in gold and 3 in silver.

In Figure Skating, the current standing is that the ROC won the most medals with 2 in gold, 3 in silver, and 1 in bronze. These results however are provisional due to the investigation into 15 year old ROC figure skater Kamila Valieva. Valieva. Valieva had tested positive for trimetazidine,a drug typically prescribed to much older patients suffering from angina and other heart-related conditions, in december. The violation did not come to light  until after Valieva placed first in the first part of the individual competition. According to the International Testing Agency, Valieva’s sample was collected by the Russian Anti-Doping Agency on December 25, however, the World Anti-Doping Agency-accredited Swedish laboratory that analyzed the sample didn’t report its results until February 8. This caused her immediate suspension and delayed the medal ceremony for the Russian team to have gold in team figure skating. Valieva successfully appealed the suspension, and was allowed to compete again in the women’s individual competition. Her lawyer claimed that Valieva had inadvertently ingested trimetazidine, and the argument swayed the three judges at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, who allowed her to continue to compete at the Olympics.
