Girls’ basketball will have their fourth district game on Friday against Madisonville starting at 5:00 p.m.

We want to try to play at a high level each game,” head varsity coach Sally Whitaker said. “We really try to focus on strengthening our weaknesses as a team.

They started their first district game on January 10 at Rusk winning 68-50. They played against Palestine on January 14 winning 63-24. On Tuesday, the Lady Eagles beat the Lady Blackcats 87-31.

“I am so thankful to start my first year on varsity and the girls have really welcomed me and shown me the ropes,” freshman Shadasia Brackens said. “District is a whole other ballgame and I am excited to go through it with my teammates.”

Madisonville is also in its district along with Rusk, Mexia, and Palestine. They all play each other twice for district games.

“I have impacted my team this year by simply showing up to practice and working hard every day and just going into the game with my best defense,” senior Jada Clark said. “I’m looking forward to district to show all of the teams what we are made of.”

Jv started their district games on January 14 against Palestine and won 47-43. Their overall season record is 10-10, 1-1 for district.

The girls are really coming along this year and they are developing really well,” head jv coach Tarsha Graves said. “I’m excited this season watching the girls learn and grow.”

Varsity competed at the Aggieland tournament during the Christmas break placing first place.

“ We had 10 different players score in each district game so far,” Whitaker said. “Everyone understands that we can’t accomplish our main goal for this season unless we have a team-first mentality.”
