As baby eagles learn to soar and fly, their parents support and care for them, teaching them independence, respect, and perseverance. As they grow and leave their close friends and family, life will offer many great and adventurous opportunities.

At the end of last year, Superintendent Tony Price asked art teacher Susan Walsh if the art students would design an image portraying this idea for the new sign in front of the school.

FHS alumna Brittani Oglesbee entered the school-wide contest. As the winner, her artwork will be displayed for years to come.

“[The sign symbolizes] how parents and the school care for and nurture the young of our community,” Walsh said. “I asked all my art students to create a design in competition with each other for our new sign.”

Price requested an image of two eagle parents and chicks for a new sign out front to replace the old one. Other than these guidelines, the students were free to make their own design however they wanted.

“I had an idea to put some little baby eagles in the nest with the parents flying to them,” Oglesbee said. “One thing I tried to do with my design was make a lot of cutouts on it because I knew it would be made out of metal and Mrs. Walsh suggested we do that to make the design more intricate.”

It took Oglesbee about a week to draw her design and more than a week to clean it up and format it to submit. After collecting all the participants’ artwork, a committee selected Oglesbee’s. Mike Bartlett from the maintenance department cut out her design from a metal sheet.

“Overall, I am really happy with how it looks out front of the school,” Oglesbee said. “I am thankful for [the school board] choosing [my design].”
