While preparing for her grand opening of the Twisted Whisk on July 20, 2024, Holly Roberson opted to use a new cutting utensil for her from-scratch sourdough bread. Unfortunately for her, this unsuspecting decision would result in the tip of her finger being cut clean off, striking tragedy in the hearts of her eagerly anticipating customers. Afterwards, people held their finger up with her in a group photo as a humorous, yet thoughtful act of solidarity.
Since then, she has made a notable recovery and an outstanding brand for herself. She is known for her specialty in custom cakes and various breads.
“I went to nursing school when I was 19 until we adopted my boys. I made cakes for Morgan and some friends, and then it just kind of grew from there. Unfortunately, I stopped doing it once the kids started school because of these new responsibilities. I felt lost and didn’t know what to do with myself. Overall, I would say that my kids inspired me to start my own business because I want them to know they can do anything.”
She then began incorporating espresso based drinks, specialty lattes and seasonal desserts.
“I actually never planned to do coffee, but I saw that there was a coffee school called Texas Coffee School in Arlington. I thought that it would be neat to have a coffee shop, so we just added that too and it’s the messiest thing I’ve ever done. It was an amazing experience. I learned so much about the history, science, and brewing of coffee. It helped me produce a great quality product in my shop!”
She’s genuine about her craft, gets inspiration from social media, is meticulous with her decisions and does everything purposefully. She owns her own personal blend in Helocates for her business.
“I have super high expectations, and I have a picture of what I think my business, or even a product, is supposed to look like in my head, so it’s hard for me whenever it doesn’t turn out the way that I planned for it to. It’s a challenge, how much everything costs. You have to market yourself and your stuff all the time, and although that’s not surprising, it has proven to be an obstacle. We’re just embracing the imperfections instead of expecting perfection.”
While the previous owner’s design boasted a variety of colors on the interior, Roberson bought the establishment and remodeled it with a more minimalist approach in mind.
“It was very colorful here when I first moved in, so I wanted a clean slate. I wanted it to be a little bit modern, so I went more modern with my light fixtures, but also traditional. It’s a little bit of everything that I like. I’m not finished with it yet. I like the modern but also the traditional stuff, just a combination of new stuff and old stuff.”
The Twisted Whisk is open Wednesdays through Fridays from 9 am to 4pm, and Saturdays from 9 am to 12 pm.
