The Recording Academy® announced the nominations for the 67th Annual GRAMMY Awards on November 8, 2024. Beyoncé leads with 11 nods while Taylor Swift, Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, Billie Eilish, and Charli xcx are among the most recognized. The main categories of the ceremony are Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Best New Artist, and Album of the Year.
The Song of the Year (SOTY) category recognizes exceptional songwriting in one song. The nominations include: “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” – Shaboozey, “BIRDS OF A FEATHER” – Billie Eilish, “Die With A Smile” – Lady Gaga & Bruno Mars, “Fortnight” – Taylor Swift & Post Malone, “Good Luck, Babe!” – Chappell Roan, “Not Like Us” – Kendrick Lamar, “Please Please Please” – Sabrina Carpenter, and “TEXAS HOLD ‘EM” – Beyoncé. Preston thinks that Chappell will win this category because of the song’s heartbreaking meaning and cathartic bridge section. Addison thinks that Billie is going to win because she has been in the industry for a while making hit after hit.
The Record of the Year (ROTY) award celebrates production, melodies, and instrumentation of a singular track. The nominees are: “Now and Then” – The Beatles, “TEXAS HOLD ‘EM” – Beyoncé, “Espresso” – Sabrina Carpenter, “360” – Charli xcx, “BIRDS OF A FEATHER” – Billie Eilish, “Not Like Us” – Kendrick Lamar, “Good Luck, Babe!” – Chappell Roan, and “Fortnight” – Taylor Swift & Post Malone. Addison and Preston both predict that Sabrina will take home this category. “Espresso” has the most easily recognizable melody of any release this year, and undoubtedly deserves a GRAMMY.
The Best New Artist Category acknowledges those whose releases this year achieved a breakthrough into the public eye and notably impacted the musical landscape. The nominees for this year are: Benson Boone, Sabrina Carpenter, Doechii, Khruangbin, Raye, Chappell Roan, Shaboozey, Teddy Swims. All artists in this category had a breakout year, However, the two artists that gained the most stardom and cemented themselves as pop icons in 2024 were Sabrina and Chappell. Addison’s prediction is that Chappell Roan will win best new artist because she gained a lot of popularity very fast and became well known in a matter of months.
The Album of the Year (AOTY) celebrates every aspect of a body of work and is widely regarded by critics and music listeners alike as the most prestigious award that any recording artist can win in the music industry. This year, the nominees include: “New Blue Sun” – André 3000, “COWBOY CARTER” – Beyoncé, “Short n’ Sweet” – Sabrina Carpenter, “BRAT” – Charli xcx, “Djesse Vol. 4” – Jacob Collier, “HIT ME HARD AND SOFT” – Billie Eilish, “The Rise And Fall Of A Midwest Princess” – Chappell Roan, and “THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT” – Taylor Swift. 2024 was a thrilling year for all music lovers, as seemingly everyone’s favorite artist released an album. Preston considers himself a massive Swiftie, but believes that Charli xcx will take home the biggest award of the night. To say BRAT redefined dance/electronic music would be an understatement; it greatly influenced artists to start experimenting with club culture and received the highest rating on Metacritic for any release in 2024 so far. For years, Charli has been snubbed by the academy. Now, she finally is getting what she has deserved after a decade of hard work. The unique promotion tactics used to promote the record is also to thank for her newfound success. Terms such as “brat summer,” “so Julia,” and “bumpin’ that,” are just a few iconic catchphrases fans use to reference the album. Additionally, many brands and celebrities used the black-on-green aesthetic from the BRAT cover for promotional/entertainment purposes. Addison thinks that “HIT ME HARD AND SOFT” will win album of the year. It contains a variety of emotions including sadness, happiness, and even grief adding a sense of relatability any listener can connect with. Overall, the general aesthetics of this album make it highly enjoyable and a very cohesive piece of art.
