Five powerlifters will be heading to the THSPA State Championships tomorrow at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene.
“We’ve got five guys going this year,” coach Kevin Childers said. “We got three that are in definite medal contention, and two that have to work really hard.”
The boys competed at the Regional Meet in West on March 9 and advanced with the following totals: Junior Jose Gutierrez in the 114 weight class placed third, and received a qualifying total of 880 pounds; Senior Eli Castillo in the 132 weight class placed third, and received a qualifying total of 1100 pounds; senior Collin Glass in the 165 weight class placed second with a total of 1275 pounds; Junior Landon Salinas in the 242 weight class placed first with a total of 1685 pounds; and senior Brady Williams in the 275 weight class placed first with a total of 1610 pounds.
“Powerlifting is fun,” senior Collin Glass said. “Coach Chill asked me to join, and I have enjoyed it ever since. I’m proud that I am going to State.”
The girls competed at the THSWPA State Championships at the Comerica Center in Frisco last week. Freshmen Rylie Stone in the 114 weight class placed third overall, and senior Taylor Stone in the 132 weight class also placed third overall. Senior Destiny Dowell, senior Emma Jo Smith, and sophomore Callie Morgan also competed at the State Meet; and sophomore Auren Adams went as a State Alternate.
“My favorite part of powerlifting was the bonds that we created with each other,” senior Taylor Stone said. “We would do anything for each other, and our teammates were always so supportive.”
