Sisters senior Deyla Morgan and sophomore Callie Morgan, members of the UIL spelling team, will compete in the Region 12 Spanish Spelling Bee in Waco on Feb. 22.
“I started last year,” Spanish teacher Rebecca Watson said. “I was helping Mrs. Muller, and it’s very new to the district. I think it’s important and I like it.”
In this contest, the spellers are given a white board and a marker. When the judge gives the speller a word, the speller must write down their word on the white board and spell the word aloud in Spanish. If the speller is correct, they get to advance to the next round.
“I started the first year Fairfield started this,” senior Deyla Morgan said. “I am enjoying it so much. It is a combination of spelling and learning different languages.”
With the spelling, they must be very specific. If the word has an accent, for example vértigo, the speller must say “e con acento”. Also, if the speller want the word to be repeated, they have to say “Repeate la palabra, por favor.”
“I feel like [The Spanish Spelling Bee] is an equal opportunity for all ethnicities to be able to participate,” Watson said. “I feel like it’s one extra level of learning Spanish.”
