Students will have the opportunity to add cosmetology courses to their classes as cosmetology was added as an official class this year.
¨I love the students and watching them be creative,¨ cosmetology instructor Dena McQuinn said. ¨We really do have extremely talented students and my goal is to help them refine and grow their skills.¨
Within the first 9 weeks the students have learned skills such as: proper client draping, shampooing, scientific brushing, full curl demo (with rollers and pin curls), zero-elevation haircut, bubble set, blow drying with a round brush, and a square-layered haircut. In September alone they learned about color application and the importance of preparedness and cleaning up using mannequins to assist.
¨There are often videos incorporated into our learning day,” McQuinn said. “Sometimes we will watch the video in its entirety, then I have them watch me apply the same techniques on a mannequin. Next, they apply them to their mannequin,”
Right now the class is learning the State Board Round Layer haircut. This haircut is a step-by-step process, so they watch a small portion of the video and execute the same thing on their mannequin.
¨We are in and out of the classroom/lab six or seven times learning just one portion of the haircut,” McQuinn said. “We watch, review, execute, and debrief…..which helps them learn from others.¨
