On Dec. 8, The fairly new game Baldur’s Gate 3 won game of the year. This game is a role-playing, action, fantasy, and strategy game. The game itself was released on Aug. 3. It is based on the popular role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons. In a few short months, this game was able to get up to third on the leader board for role-playing games.
Before you do anything, you need to create your character. Which includes but is not limited to, appearance, race, and class. When you first start the game you arrive on a mind flayer ship. The plot/story line is then based entirely on the player’s decisions. Every action that the player makes will affect the story line somehow. Either it is a character having a negative or positive reaction, or the entire course of the game will go a different direction. Each of the characters has their own unique voice and backstory. Some characters can be added to the player’s “party,” or a group of characters that the player uses to fight/explore.
My favorite character to play with is a pale elf with white curly hair, known as Astarion. His base class is a rogue but also gets some abilities from his vampire origin. Every class has their own unique abilities and talents. For example, Astarion is a rogue so he can hide in the shadows and deal devastating damage with his sneak attack ability. The game also has racial aggression. For example, if you pick the “Drow” race in character creation, then most of the people on the surface world will talk to you like you are beneath them.
My by far favorite aspect of this game is to be able to change your class or appearance at any time you wish. So if you are getting bored of the same class, you can switch it up by changing your class completely or by multi-classing. Multi-classing is when you have a main class and have a secondary class as well.
Overall I believe that this game very accurately represents the fantasy and role-playing aspect of Dungeons & Dragons. I would recommend this game to anyone who is a fan of the game or wants to start playing without having to go through most of the normal struggles with D&D.
