According to the Food and Drug Administration, 1 in 10, or 2.5 million, U.S middle and high schoolers are currently struggling with the usage of drugs. Red ribbon week, which supports the fight against drug usage in teenagers, has continued for 25 years and occurs during a week in October each year.
Red ribbon week is not limited to the younger kids. Students of each campus dressed up to this year’s theme “Be kind to your mind” to bring awareness.
¨I really enjoyed crazy sock day and dressing up for red ribbon week,¨ senior Kaliyah Gasaway said.
Human brains continue to develop until the age of 26; however, the usage of drugs can delay the development of it and cause serious damage. When teenagers use drugs, they are directly altering how they think, feel, and act. To bring awareness to the issue, Nancy Reagan started and helped launch red ribbon week in 1985.
¨I like how we use fun activities,” high school counselor Teri Frauenberger said, “and how we show examples of doing fun things without the use of drugs.¨
