Shadasia Brackens goes up for a layup during the Fairfield tournament.

With the smell of popcorn and the screams and cheers from the crowd, the Eagles had some ups and downs in last week’s tournament. The Lady Eagles dominated the girls tournament finishing the finals against Madisonville with the score of 61-38. The boys were knocked out in the semi-finals against Athens with a score of 79-60.

Eagles and Lady Eagles will both continue district play at home against Groesbeck on Friday.

“I thought the tournament was a success,” head coach Sally Whitaker said. “I like that people from our community get to see a variety of basketball all in one weekend. It’s also a great time for community members to come support both the boys and girls teams.”

The girls started the tournament Thursday against Bosqueville with a 73-25 win. Their next game that night was a 38 point win against Breckenridge with a score of 70-32. The Lady Eagles won 71-16 against Waxahachie Life on Friday, which brought them to the semi finals against Mt. Vernon with a score of 56-19.

We started off our season not really understanding each other,” freshmen player Kaylee Williams said. “I felt the tournament went as we planned it to be just to work hard and be successful. I felt as if we have been working together more and becoming a better team and we have grown closer to each other.”

The boys won their first game on Thursday against Inspired Vision  with a score of 75-14. McKinney Christian Academy took the win Friday with a score of 77-46. Saturday, the boys played in the semi-finals against Athens and lost with the score of 79-60.

“Overall, we did good,” senior player Rex Bean said. “We played some high caliber teams and all the teams who played on our level we beat pretty bad. So I think we’re still going in the right direction, but we still have a lot to do.”
