Holiday in the Halls Tradition Returns
The high school hosted Holiday in the Halls on December 13, with the Grand Band from Eagle Land performing shortly after. The traditional open house event was cancelled last year due to covid-19 restrictions.
The culinary arts classes provided snacks and drinks for the open house guests. The hallway decoration judges, who were from the district and community but not from the high school campus, split the competition into two categories this year.
In the non-academic category, Coach Tunstall’s third period class won 3rd place with ‘Santa Stuck in the Chimney.’ The art and math departments placed second with their Candyland hallway. Mrs. Gillian’s class won 1st place and Best Overall for their Whoville hallway.
The science and Spanish hall teachers won first place academic with Santa’s incline, Chemis-tree, and Spanish Christmas Cards.
“I was excited to know that our hard work paid off,” chemistry teacher Elizabeth Collier said. “I just used some of what I had done before, but added some different components to it.”
Rhoden won 2nd place in the Academic category that featured students’ work of digital Christmas graphics on the walls.
“I do it for the students each year, not for the competition,” BIM teacher Misty Rhoden said. “They really enjoy the decorations and experience of Holiday in the Halls.”
Rhoden’s 2nd, 4th, 5th, and 7th period classes created the ornaments and decorations with Microsoft Excel and Adobe Photoshop.
“My 3rd period classes created Santa’s workshop, the Gingerbread House, and the large Christmas Trees,” Rhoden said. “Various classes helped hang the lights and put up the other Christmas decorations.”
After Holiday in the Halls, the band performed their annual Christmas concert.
“I think there is a lot of tradition associated with the Christmas concerts,” head band director Russell Holland said. “I’m going to try to honor that as best as I can.”
The songs featured in the performance include Joy to the World, Cantique de Noel, Santa the Barbarian, House of the Rising Bells, and A Festive Finale.
