The events and effects of September 11, 2001 impacted not just the United States, but the world around it. Twenty years later, students in Coach Kerry Hand’s health classes participated in a symbolic reminder of this day.

In remembrance of 9/11, students in Hand’s class climbed 110 flights of stairs in the gym today. Each set of stairs is meant to represent the stairs climbed by the first responders at the world trade center.

“I am hoping that this activity will help students understand the sacrifices and efforts made by the men and women who responded on 9/11,” Coach Hand said. “I hope they remember the experience of coming together as a group to honor those fallen heroes.”

A total of 2,996 people died in the 9/11 attacks, including 412 emergency workers at the scene.
