English teacher Nanceen Hoskins will receive the Teacher of the Year award and senior Anna Kaye Williams will receive the Student of the Year award tonight at the Chamber of Commerce banquet.

I am really surprised that I got this award,” Williams said. “There are so many deserving seniors, so I feel really honored to have been nominated.”

In order to win student of the year, principal Von Wade looks at grades, involvement in school activities, leadership, and citizenship.

She is intelligent but also has a work ethic that enhances that intelligence,” Wade said. “She is talented in several areas and does not waste that talent; instead she is committed to do the best she can.”

The student of the year is selected by the principal and the teacher of the year is selected by the high school faculty.

Many of Fairfield High School teachers go above and beyond the average,” Hoskins said. “I’m glad for it, but I also think that so many teachers are Teacher of the Year.”

Requirements for teacher of the year include a teaching professional who spends the majority of their day teaching children in the classroom, and someone who exemplifies excellence in teaching.

“Ms. Hoskins is everything I look for in a teacher,” Wade said. “She is intelligent, committed to excellence, fair, consistent, demanding (not only of herself but her students), willing to work outside of school hours to assist students, and teaches students more than her subject matter.”

After the faculty selects teachers, there are three nominees at the end and they pick from those teachers.
