Twenty six FHS students will compete in the Regional UIL competition on April 14 in 15 academic events at Sam Houston State University.

FHS has won the district UIL competition for 21 consecutive years, and 28 out of the last 29 years. Typically, FHS wins by a landslide, but this year they only won by 115 points.

“We should never get satisfied or complacent,” principal Von Wade said. “We should always strive to be better.”

After day one of district competition, the points total left Palestine with 315 points, Athens with 353 points, and Fairfield leading with 510 points. The computer applications team was expected to sweep their competition; however, during their competition the students had to forfeit their points because their computer crashed. Technology director Arland Thill drove a new computer to Athens for Davis’ remaining events, which both won first place team.

“The team would’ve went 1, 2, 3 without a doubt after seeing the scores from the competition,” computer applications coach Davin Davis said. “Victoria had a great shot at making it to state, but because of this unforeseeable incident, that’s not happening.”

Prose interpretation competitors senior Britain Bossier and senior Braden Bossier placed first and third respectively at the district competition and advanced to the regional competition. Junior Morgan Coleman qualified for regional meet as the district alternate.

“I have done my event since 3rd grade and I love it,” senior Britain Bossier said. “It’s basically acting but without bright lights, a costume, and a stage.”

Students swept three of four journalism events: news, feature and editorial writing. Students placed first, second, and fourth in headline writing. The journalism team won last year’s regional meet, with two seniors advancing to state.

“I’m so excited that our whole journalism team is headed to regionals,” junior Anna Kaye Williams said. “I really hope we can get first place team at regionals this year like we did last year.”

Journalism, spelling and vocabulary, social studies, accounting, computer science, and literary criticism teams placed first as a team, with all competitors advancing to the region meet. Current Issues, science, and speech placed second as a team. Further results are listed below.
